Our dogs benefit from regular exercise, just like we do. Physical activity can help with disease prevention, joint stability, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. With regular outings your dog will elevate his mood, stimulate his mind, relieve boredom and stress, and provide environmental enrichment and social interactions that they might not otherwise get. Best of all, walking contributes to better health for both you and your canine friend. Here are some tips for a happy, healthy walk:
1) Make sure you and your dog are healthy before starting any exercise program. Set a walking goal, and like any exercise, don't over do it!
2) Walk when the weather is the coolest. Because your dog is closer to the ground...asphalt and concrete especially, is much hotter down there. If the surface is hot to your hand, DON'T walk on it! Your dog will overheat before you so watch for fatigue and know his limits. Always take water for your dog and take a shady break for both of you to take a drink. Dogs dehydrate faster than humans.
3) NO headphones/ear plugs EVER. You attention should always be on your dog and the surroundings.
4) No talking on your phone except in an emergency.
5) Pay attention to your dog's body language. Chances are he will alert you about anything amiss in your walking enviroment long before you become aware. Whether there is a dog around the corner, bike whizzing by, or human approaching, his ears and tail will tell you the story and help you manage the situation -- but only if you are paying attention.
6) Do not let your dog run off-leash! Fenced in areas like the dog park are the only places to let your dog have safe freedom.
7) Manage your dog's behavior! Don't assume that it is OK for your dog to interact with every dog and human you come across. It is rude and can trigger unexpected and maybe unwanted reactions.
8) Make sure collar or head halter fits properly. Collar should be on tight enough so your dog cannot back out of it. Head halter should be loose enough around the muzzle so he can comfortably pant and drink but tight enough that it does not slip off his nose. A 6' leather leash gives you good control of your dog and becomes suble in your hands with use. A retractable leash is dangerous as it can get wrapped around you, your dog, a tree, or another person or dog. It will cut whatever it is wrapped around PLUS it is almost impossible to unwrap it without cutting your hand! Please use caution if you insist on using one.
9) Yup, take some really tasty treats so you can reward his good behavior as you walk.
